Spring Cleaning – How (Not) To Clean Out Your Wardrobe

2017. március 19. - LaMimieux

Every now and then I venture on cleaning out  my wardrobe; to be honest, I’m pretty bad at it. I have way too many clothes because I always keep everything, hoping that it will be useful one day – because it has to, right? I bought that chiffon blouse for a reason. Well, yeah… I just can’t remember why.

To be fair, even though I have a lotlot of stuff in my wardrobe, most of it is from second-hand shops and most of it has been there for many-many years – I’m a simple girl, if I like something, I wear it until it’s no longer wearable. Ask my mother. I’ve been a receiver of annoyed eye-rolling ever since elementary school because of this. However, I’m trying to be better at clothes; first of all, I can’t even remember the last time I bought a clothing item. Plus, I went over my wardrobe again and was pretty ruthless. Well, compared to previous attempts.

Anyways, here are my tips on how to clean out your wardrobe:

1+2: Set rules and try to not to break them

I try to keep a few simple rules, like if I haven’t worn it in years, it has to go. Obviously, I’m not too good at keeping it, otherwise I wouldn’t have this many stuff. But I’m trying! Another rule, one that is much easier to follow is to throw away things that don’t really fit anymore. Of course there are things you need to treat with a different mindset, like occasion wear and sentimental pieces.

3. Have an assistant

I always have my sister around when I’m cleaning out my wardrobe because I know she’ll tell me if something looks ridiculously and has to go. And it’s also less boring if you have someone to talk to during the process – we just discussed our opinions on Snape’s role in the Harry Potter novels and it was a fascinating talk.

4. Let there be music

I always have some music on while I sort out my clothes. It’s more fun that way.

5. Find a new place for your old stuff

The stuff that I banish from my wardrobe usually goes through numerous stages after I decided to let them go: first my younger sister goes through them, then sometimes my mom, and then it usually goes to a charity or to a clothing donation bin – just because I don’t need them anymore, someone else maybe does.

6. Treat yourself

You did good. You deserve a little reward, like a movie and a snack, or a glass of wine. It’s also great for motivation, because let’s be honest, sometimes you just want to stop cleaning out that damn wardrobe after 10 minutes. I know I do.

And finally, here's a pic of the pile I got rid of – let this be an inspiration in case you decide to clean out your wardrobe. :)
